Dai Vernon - The Professor

Dai Vernon (1894-1992), born David Frederick Wingfield Verner in Ottawa, Canada, was one of the most influential magicians of the 20th century. Known throughout the magic world as “The Professor,” Vernon had an enormous influence on modern close-up magic, card technique and the philosophy of sleight of hand.

Early Life

Vernon became fascinated with magic at an early age and developed a particular passion for playing cards and sleight of hand. After moving to New York, he immersed himself in the world of professional magicians, card experts and gamblers, constantly searching for new techniques and better ways of performing existing ones.

Rather than simply collecting tricks, Vernon studied every detail of a performance. He believed that movements should appear natural and that unnecessary actions should be eliminated. This pursuit of simplicity and perfection became one of the defining characteristics of his approach to magic.

The Man Who Fooled Houdini

One of the most famous stories in magic history involves Dai Vernon and Harry Houdini.

Houdini was known for claiming that he could discover the secret behind any card trick after seeing it performed several times. Vernon showed him an exceptionally clean version of the classic Ambitious Card effect, in which a selected card repeatedly rises to the top of the deck.

Despite seeing the effect performed again and again, Houdini was unable to determine the method.

The encounter helped establish Vernon's legendary reputation and earned him the nickname:

“The Man Who Fooled Houdini.”

Master of Close-Up Magic

Although Vernon became particularly famous for his work with playing cards, his interests extended far beyond card magic.

He studied and refined techniques involving coins, the Cups and Balls, the Linking Rings and many other classics of magic.

Vernon was fascinated by the idea that a magician should make difficult techniques appear effortless. His work emphasized natural movement, economy of motion, timing, misdirection and careful construction.

Many techniques and routines associated with Vernon became foundations of modern close-up magic.

The Magic Castle

In the 1960s, Vernon became closely associated with the Magic Castle in Hollywood, California.

The Castle became his home within the magic community, and magicians from around the world travelled there to meet him, listen to his stories and study his ideas.

Vernon became a mentor and source of inspiration for generations of accomplished magicians. His influence can be seen in the work of numerous performers and authors who helped shape modern close-up magic.

Books and Legacy

Vernon's ideas, routines and techniques were preserved through numerous influential books and recordings.

Among the best-known works associated with him are:

- Dai Vernon's Book of Magic
- Inner Secrets of Card Magic
- More Inner Secrets of Card Magic
- Further Inner Secrets of Card Magic

His teachings continue to be studied by magicians decades after their original publication.

Dai Vernon died in California on August 21, 1992, at the age of 98.

His influence remains deeply embedded in modern magic. His pursuit of natural handling, simplicity and continuous refinement changed the way generations of magicians approached their craft.

For many close-up magicians, Dai Vernon remains simply what generations of his students called him:

“The Professor.”
