Cube 3 by Steven Brundage - Review

Steven Brundage · 2015

A comprehensive Rubik’s Cube magic course that pairs a performance-ready speed cube with a broad, practical toolbox of visual solves.

Cube 3 is not a single self-working trick dressed up as a course. It is Steven Brundage’s working approach to cube magic: a collection of visual solving sequences, handling, flourishes and performance ideas built around a genuine 3×3 cube. The release includes a speed cube and extensive online instruction, so it is designed as a starting point as well as a deeper study resource.

The central strength is recognisability. A mixed Rubik’s Cube needs no explanation: spectators already know it is difficult, which makes a clean visual solve immediately meaningful. The material ranges from fast, punchy moments such as an instant or toss-up solve to slower transformations such as the Imagination Solve. There are also routines involving a bag, behind-the-back handling and colour changes. That variety makes it easier to build a sequence with a beginning, escalation and finale instead of presenting one isolated puzzle stunt.

The teaching is unusually broad. Brundage covers basic and more advanced cube-solving ideas, practical handling, care of the cube and flourishes alongside the routines. This matters because cube magic only looks effortless when the performer is comfortable with the object. The instruction rewards repetition; a newcomer can find an accessible entry point, but the strongest results come from taking time to make the solves smooth, casual and properly motivated.

Cube 3’s most persuasive feature is that it uses a real, examinable cube rather than relying on a conspicuous special prop. That gives the plots a directness that plays well close-up, in walk-around settings and on a small stage. The trade-off is equally clear: this is not instant competence. The buyer needs to practise the handling and decide which routines suit their own performing style.

For performers who want to add cube magic rather than merely own a clever gimmick, Cube 3 remains a substantial package. It supplies material, context and a sensible progression. The best way to approach it is to choose one routine, rehearse it until the cube feels like an everyday object, then expand gradually.
