Wonder Words

Kenton Knepper

Kenton Knepper’s audio teaching series on language in magic and mentalism. A guide to its purpose, practical study and the differences between physical sets, workbooks and later course editions.

Language as part of the method

Wonder Words by Kenton Knepper examines how a performer’s choice of words can shape the experience of a magic or mentalism presentation. It is primarily an audio teaching series with accompanying written material, rather than a conventional book of individual tricks. Its distinctive question is what the spoken presentation contributes to an effect, beyond merely describing the performer’s actions.

For a working magician, that is a concrete issue. Instructions can help a spectator understand their role or leave them uncertain. A sentence can establish a premise before anything happens, while a careless explanation can draw attention to a procedure that would otherwise pass unnoticed. These are reasons to study the language of a performance deliberately rather than add a script after learning the handling.

What kind of material is it?

Wonder Wizards identifies a progression from cassette releases to CDs and then MP3 versions. The later Complete Course is organised into downloadable lessons and includes workbooks. Those versions should not be treated as interchangeable packages: an older physical set does not automatically contain everything in the later online course.

This product page covers the Wonder Words family. Each marketplace seller must identify the actual version offered. A single volume, a complete audio set, a companion workbook and access to an online course are different items. The title alone is insufficient to establish what the buyer will receive.

In particular, an accompanying booklet should not be assumed to replace the audio instruction. Conversely, owning recordings does not prove that a separate workbook is included. A precise inventory is much more useful than describing an offer simply as “complete”.

Subject and expectations

The author presents the material through the language of suggestion and NLP. Topics include assumptions carried by wording, indirect meaning and vocal delivery. These are the stated teaching interests; they are not a promise that particular sentences will control every spectator or guarantee a chosen response.

A productive expectation is that the course may help you reconsider a script and the way you deliver it. An unproductive one is that listening to recordings will remove the need for technique, structure or rehearsal. Words remain part of a performance involving real people, with different expectations and interpretations.

Do not confuse a discussion of verbal influence with a clinical qualification or a universal scientific account of human behaviour. On this page the material is considered as performance instruction. Judge an application by whether it makes your presentation clearer and more effective under your own conditions.

A practical way to study it

Choose one routine you already perform and write down the exact sentences you use. Separate instructions from the premise, transitions and final revelation. This makes it easier to identify a specific problem: perhaps a participant does not know when to act, or the audience loses track of why an action matters.

Work on one passage at a time. Try an alternative, speak it aloud and compare recordings of both versions. Keep the physical handling consistent where possible so that you are evaluating the change in presentation rather than several unrelated changes at once.

The goal is not to fill every sentence with an elaborate linguistic device. A spectator still needs to understand the visible task. If a revised instruction sounds unnatural, attracts attention to itself or obscures what is happening, simplify it. A clear line delivered with conviction can be more useful than a complicated line that the performer struggles to say.

Tone, pauses and translation

Audio instruction is especially relevant to a subject where the sound of a sentence matters. However, imitating the teacher’s voice is not the same as developing a usable presentation. Find wording that suits your own character and a rhythm that leaves room for the participant to respond.

For performance in another language, translate the intention as well as the vocabulary. An implication in English may become too explicit, awkward or disappear altogether in a direct translation. Test the revised line with native listeners rather than assuming that a grammatically correct sentence produces the same impression.

It is also useful to practise a plain alternative. If somebody misunderstands an instruction, you should be able to explain the task politely without repeating the same obscure wording. Clear communication supports the performance more reliably than insisting the participant respond in a particular way.

Who will find it relevant?

Wonder Words is most relevant to performers who want to examine their scripts, audience instructions and spoken framing. It is less direct as a purchase for someone seeking a new prop, a visual demonstration or a beginner’s sequence of technical lessons.

The time investment therefore lies in application. Listening while doing something else may introduce the ideas, but turning them into a personal script requires deliberate work. Start with a defined performance problem so that the study has a useful outcome.

Checking a second-hand offer

Ask for the format, volume numbers, number of physical recordings and the titles of any included booklets. Request photographs of labels and printed material. For discs or tapes, ask whether playback has been checked and whether any recording is missing or damaged.

An online account should not be presumed transferable. A physical copy and a seller’s access to downloaded lessons are not the same thing. Before purchasing an offer involving account access, establish what the provider permits and what is actually being supplied.

This page does not attach an unverified publication date or claim that every edition has the same running time. Nor does it use a dealer photograph as though it represented every version. The important comparison is the identifiable contents of each actual offer.
