Penn Jillette
Penn Jillette (born 1955) is an American magician, comedian, author and broadcaster, best known as the outspoken half of Penn & Teller.
Penn Fraser Jillette was born on 5 March 1955 in Greenfield, Massachusetts. He became interested in performance through juggling, clowning and an approach to magic that treated deception openly as theatrical entertainment. After attending Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Clown College, he worked with juggler Michael Moschen and entered the experimental performance scene of the 1970s.
In 1975 Jillette began performing with Teller and Weir Chrisemer as the Asparagus Valley Cultural Society. Penn and Teller later continued as a duo, developing an unmistakable contrast: Penn became the tall, loud narrator, while Teller communicated mainly through action and expression. Their work combined technically demanding illusion, comedy, apparent explanations of methods and a skeptical examination of fraud and supernatural claims. Off-Broadway success in 1985 led to Broadway in 1987, international tours and a long-running Las Vegas residency.
Jillette’s voice is central to the act. His rapid monologues do more than introduce tricks: they establish rhythm, create misdirection and invite the audience to think about honesty, belief and performance. With Teller, he has appeared in numerous television specials and series. Penn & Teller: Bullshit! examined controversial claims through comedy and skepticism, while Penn & Teller: Fool Us gave magicians from around the world a prominent television platform.
Outside the duo, Jillette has worked as an author, radio and podcast host, actor and musician. His books include God, No! and Presto, as well as works written with Teller. Yet his lasting importance to magic rests on the partnership: Penn & Teller proved that performers could reveal parts of the theatrical machinery, challenge the traditions of the magician’s persona and still preserve astonishment. Jillette’s combination of showmanship, argument and comic timing has made him one of modern magic’s most recognizable voices.
