Juan Tamariz

Juan Tamariz was a Spanish magician, author, teacher and theorist, widely regarded as one of the most influential card magicians of the modern era. Born in Madrid in 1942, he combined exceptional technical skill with an unmistakable stage personality: laughter, apparent chaos, warmth and direct involvement of the audience. Behind that spontaneity stood exceptionally precise construction and decades of study.

In 1973 Tamariz won first prize in Card Magic at the FISM World Championship in Paris. Together with the intellectual tradition of Arturo de Ascanio and the Escuela Mágica de Madrid, he helped establish a Spanish approach to close-up magic centred on naturalness, emotional impact and the careful management of an audience’s attention and memory.

His books became essential texts for generations of magicians. The Five Points in Magic examines how the body, gaze, voice, hands and feet guide attention. The Magic Way explores how performers can eliminate possible explanations until an effect feels impossible. Mnemonica presented his influential memorised-deck system, while Sonata, Verbal Magic and The Magic Rainbow further documented his routines and artistic theory.

Tamariz was also a major television personality in Spain and Latin America. His imaginary violin, infectious laugh and playful energy made him familiar to a broad public, while professional magicians valued the depth hidden beneath the comedy. His honours included Magician of the Year, Performing Fellowship and Masters Fellowship awards from the Academy of Magical Arts, as well as FISM recognition for theory and philosophy. He died in Madrid in 2026, leaving a body of work that continues to shape how card magic is created, performed and understood.
